Overview of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road.

The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project is a visionary venture that goes beyond asphalt and concrete; it represents the promise of seamless connectivity and has the potential to change the city’s narrative. It stretches 12 kilometres and serves as the city’s fourth vital corridor, linking the eastern and western realms. It joins the likes of Ghodbunder Road, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), and Santacruz-Chembur Link Road.

The estimated total cost of the project is INR 12,013 crore. Its main objective is to drastically cut travel times and lessen traffic congestion.

At the moment, taking Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg and JVLR will take you approximately one hour and twenty-five minutes to get from Mulund to Goregaon. But this time will only take about 20 minutes after the new Mulund-Goregaon Link Road is put into place.

Mulund-Goregaon Link Road: Project Plan

The Mulund-Goregaon Link Road project connects the Eastern Express Highway in Mulund with the Western Express Highway in Goregaon, with the goal of establishing a crucial east-west corridor. This connection is required during peak hours due to the extreme congestion on routes like Ghodbunder Road in Thane and Powai.

The 12.2 km Mulund-Goregaon Link Road project, put forth by BMC, calls for the building of two tunnels beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Between Film City in Goregaon and Khindipada in Mulund, a 4.7-kilometer tunnel with a depth range of 20 to 160 metres will be built.

In order to ensure that no above-ground ventilation outlets disturb wildlife, innovative force ventilation technology will be used during tunnel construction.

Two 6-lane flyovers will cross the remaining 6-7 km of the corridor at Mulund’s Hedgewar junction and from Dindoshi Court to Film City. To enhance traffic flow, some sections of the road will also be widened.

The road will start in Goregaon on the Western Express Highway and at the Mulund-Airoli signal on the Eastern Express Highway.

Mulund-Goregaon Link Road Project – Recent Updates

Mumbai’s infrastructure is evolving along with its skyline, with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project making considerable headway. The following is a summary of the latest developments surrounding the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road that are influencing this monumental project:

Tunnelling Forward: According to a significant update from the municipal commissioner in February 2024, the 4.7-kilometer twin tunnels under construction for the GMLR are expected to be finished by October 2028. These tunnels, which will be located beneath the surface of the earth, will be as deep as 20 to 160 metres, showcasing the engineering creativity of the project.

Clearing the Way: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started a crucial project phase in February 2024 by tearing down 168 buildings that were in the way of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road. In order to create better connectivity between Mulund and Goregaon, this demolition drive specifically targeted homes and businesses.

Milestones in construction: The Nahur ROB is 80% completed in the first phase of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road project, with completion of the entire project anticipated by May 2024. Road widening on the Goregaon (East) and Mulund (West) sections is part of the second phase. Phase three will see the construction of a second flyover at Hedgewar Junction (Mulund West) and an elevated road at the intersection of GG Singh Road and GMLR. Notably, work orders have been issued and tunnel construction has started at Goregaon East. The tunnels include twin tunnels spanning 4.7 km and a 1.6 km box tunnel. The completion date of these tunnel projects is set for October 2028.

Real Estate Potential of the Mulund-Goregaon Link Road (GMLR)

The real estate market in Mulund, Nahur, Bhandup, and Airoli is anticipated to undergo a substantial upheaval as a result of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR).
